Thumb-key, hardware edition

I use Thumb-key to type on the phone. It's beautiful. Remarkably versatile idiom.

How would it work if it weren't on a touch screen?

Now's an ideal time to ask this question seriously, because I have a Mecha Comet preordered, and this is what I have been most excited about from a hardware wishlist perspecitve for years. (More fool me, I really need to set a lower bar for when I write these things down.)
