Medial Entities

Klee discusses in his Pedagogical Sketchbook the idea of entities which transform actions into other actions - expressed visually as arrangements of other entities whose relative capacities for action and reaction, which, when thought of as constraints upon the causal paths that pass through a configuration space in which they are present, show themselves to be superadditive. Visual signifiers for such objects behave in analogy to the objects themselves, which was Klee's particular preoccupation.

Can also be called machines.

ENGINEERING AS CAPTIVE DISCOURSE discusses engineering as the study of machines, and the self-similarity of the lens to what it studies. Limiting the domain of discourse to the medial can render the discusser a medial entity, with some additional stipulations. Exactly what those stipulations are depends on the nature of the "discusser".
